After 2 weeks of epic safaris, we decided to see the coast before leaving the lovely country of Tanzania. We stayed in the historic city of Zanzibar and then flew to Mafia Island for some scuba diving.
Stone Town is the old part of Zanzibar City, consisting of a maze of narrow alleys lined by shops, bazaars and mosques.
Old Fort is one of the oldest buildings in Stone Town, originally built by the Portuguese in the 17th century and later re-built by the Omanis in the 18th century.

Christ Church occupies where the biggest slave market of Zanzibar used to be. Construction was in fact intended to celebrate the end of slavery, with the altar said to be in the exact place where the main whipping post of the market used to be.

Born Farrokh Bulsara in Stone Town, Freddie Mercury is celebrated in a museum located in the same house where he and his family stayed until they moved to England when he was 9.
After the crowded streets of Stone Town, Mafia Island was a stark contrast. The Butiama Beach Lodge was winding down for the season and we almost had it to ourselves.
